The Magical Pumpkin
By: Sophie Jamison L.
School Time! I woke up at 5:00 am for no exact reason because school didn’t start until 9:00 am. I looked at my check list and it said…
· Get dressed
· Brush teeth
· Brush hair
· Make bed
· Clean up clothes
· Get shoes on
· Eat Breakfast
· GO!!!
So I put my favorite outfit on which was my jeans and my purple polka-dot shirt. I felt like the prettiest girl in town. My mom yelled, “come on Sophie, school is going to start…it’s exactly 8:59. I said to myself, “wow that took me a while”.
I ran downstairs then outside so fast I bet some people thought my house was going to blow up. When I was running I saw something coming from my mom’s pumpkin patch she planted last summer. I turned around and saw the biggest pumpkin in the world and it was glowing, not any glowing, it was magical glowing! I walked over to see if I was dreaming.
But the next thing I knew I was falling into the pumpkin because my sister had tripped me by putting her foot in front of me, and she even admitted it with her sinister laugh. I crashed my head on the pumpkin and turned around to cry in my mom’s lap, but she wasn’t there!
I looked around to try to find her and while I was looking, I noticed I wasn’t in Massachusetts anymore. I was in Candy Land. I started to walk around, a little bit frazzled by then, but soon I got used to it and ate all the candy I could. Candy Land was the most beautiful place in the world! It had lollipop trees, chocolate rivers, a caramel ocean, and gummie trees which were blueberry and strawberry flavored.
I was admiring all the beauty when I ran into the meanest of the mean, the Licorice Man. I remembered he was mean from the Candy Land board game. In the game you never want to land on him because you’ll lose a turn. He said, “Get off my land!” and then took out his licorice whip and hit me with it.
I started crying and ran away. I really wanted to see my mom now. I was running and crying at the same time.
While I was running I heard this voice and it said “Oh honey, don’t cry.” I looked around but I saw no one. The little voice said “I’m up here.” I looked up and saw a little lady holding a wand. I screamed and said “don’t whack me with your wand!” She said “Oh I bet you ran into Licorice Man.” I said “yes I did and he whacked me with his licorice.” I asked her “What are you doing here?” She said “I’m here to make our wishes come … true.”
Hmmm what should I wish for I wondered? I know, how about all the candy in the world. Or maybe just chocolate since that is my favorite. Or Money, money would be good. But the most important thing is I want to go …
I woke up and found myself back in my room in my bed at 5:00 in the morning. I was looking at the check list and started doing my morning chores. Then I heard my Mom call “Sophie, come eat breakfast!” I ran downstairs not even caring about what my mom said just the fact that I heard her made me feel better. I gave her a huge hug and millions of kisses, probably as many as any mother could ever ask for.
She said “Sweetie are you all right, you never do that to me?” I said “yah, I’m all right mom, I just had a really weird day.” “Can you tell me about it?” mom asked. I told her all about it and she said “Well I’m here now.” I thought to myself, yes, my wish came true!

Swimming by Alexindra
Swimming, it’s brought me my life! I had heard about it from my friend Alexia, going home from a play. I did not make the qualifications for tryouts, so I did an extra week with the head coach and other people who also did not make it. When, I first started swim team I decided to go in the lane where my friends were which was about in the front of the 1st lane out of the 3 lanes for my group which got harder as they went down, my group had lanes 8-6 out of the 8 lanes in the pool. I was at the front but, I was still being pushed by my coaches. I made swim friends really fast and I got so close because we talked at practice for a short time at the edge and at meets for hours! I improved really fast because I went on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, I worked so hard I moved to the next lane with my close friends, still I was working hard! I could not believe how much I liked it! I also loved having such close friends! I went to most of the meets and by the end of the year I was super, so close to my friends on the team and I was very good at swimming! Then, at the end of the year celebration, I went there and they gave me a trophy for doing the season. After, they started the coaches awards, where coaches pick ONE swimmer from the team who they think worked hard or admire. As I was listening, I heard one that sounded like me because they said, “The individual I chose began with me in September and showed such fast progress and confidence in her abilities she moved herself to the next lane, where the kids where a little more advanced. She earned this move and took it upon herself to make the transition. She transitioned well. From what I understand she made a whimsical, last minute decision to try out for swim team. Her instincts were good. I understand from her mom and I am convinced that this first year experience was life-changing for her. She was enthusiastic, came to almost every practice, and continued to improve as a result. Her confidence in herself and swimming blossomed.” So I knew that maybe, just maybe that would be me, as I listened more they said my name! I was so surprised and happy at the same time! When, I went up to get my award I said, “thank you” to my coach who had given me the award. I loved swim team and wanted to do it next year!
All Charged Up!
All Charged Up!

One day in June I could only drink water and apple juice! That day I was going to Children’s Hospital. I was so nervous!
When I was born my heart wasn’t beating right. It was beating too slowly. So when I was five hours old I had a pacemaker put in my body. A pacemaker is a metal, rubber object that changes the speed of the heart. Sometimes it is a little scary going into a room where surgeons open you up like a book. Even though I can’t remember anything about when I was five hours old I’ve been told that when I was that young I had my first surgery. The reason I have to have surgery again is because the pacemaker is a battery that runs out in a certain amount of years.
At two o’clock I hopped into my mom’s minivan to get a new one. I was on my way to the hospital. On my way through Boston I saw millions of cars!
As I passed through the spinning glass doors of Children’s Hospital’s lobby I passed by thousands of people and kids. Then, I climbed up the stairs and entered the waiting room.
“Hi,” everyone said. My step mom, dad, step dad, half sister, half brother, aunt, and grandparents were already there.
It felt like hours until the doctor called, “Antonio.” My parents and I walked toward the room with the doctor. I sadly waved to my family. The room was bright white. It had a white bed. I lay down and the doctor handed me some medicine. It was a smooth, pink liquid. I took it. I must have fallen asleep because the next thing I knew, I was in a different bed in a room with a TV dangling to my left. Also a mini bed on my right was in the room. My parents and another doctor were in front of me.
I opened my mouth to speak but no sound came. I knew why. I had two tubes in my throat that were giving me nutrition. I gestured for a paper and pencil. I had invented a new way to communicate!
If I got this far, I thought, it can’t be hard going forward.

Welcome
Here is our blog to share our writing pieces that were created in our very first session of the Oak Street Writing Project. Students worked hard in creating original pieces of writing and are very excited to share them with a real audience. Enjoy!
